Are we taking notes?
Synopsis of the Novel: Anna's story, Basset Mead part IV.
The novel is primarily set in the early years of the 21st Century. The principle location used is a mythical farm and some woods near Nempnett Thrubwell, Somerset, just south of the city of Bristol. Minor excursions take place to Wells, Stevenage and the local mythical Public house called ‘The Impaled Sinner’. The plot of this book runs from opening to closure and deals with the relationship between a man and a woman. Diversions occur along the way but this does not detract from their intense and passionate relationship forming, despite all the problems, some of their own making, but others heaped upon them. Will they or won't they, that is the question, and if they do, what will he propose? Anna's eyes sparkled with intent, he liked the way she held the glasses of beer. The primary character is Male aged in his mid forties and lives with two adopted children. He is heterosexual single and mostly happy with his life but knows soon he will need a mother figure for his adopted daughter. The theme that runs through the book is always try to do the right thing even though the insurmountable odds are stacked against you. Well rather that’s a lie, blunty headed stupidity and obstinacy seem to work. The religious orientation is towards Christianity, with obscure religious festivals being revived for the veneration of saints and an excuse for a party. And if you're looking for a Mills and Boon story, this ain't it, Al's and Anna's turbulent love life keeps you guessing to the end. Alice want’s her fellow back, Jason and Helen know what going on and the only person who is confused is the postman. Cassandra really needs some dinner and no one believes her. Well that’s as clear as mud. Random quote: "If Emily finds out she'll throw a wobbler dad."
Principle Characters:
Aloysius (Al) O’Brien. Male 44 convinced he is descended from the ancient Kings of Ireland. Intelligent, Owns a landrover is always fixing things. Past marriages and deaths have left him apparently bitter and he is convinced that most women are out for some gain. He would like to settle down with a nice woman about his age and intelligence but the new children actively preclude this happening. UK National, professional retired ex serviceman and father. Full time instigator of entertainment for the children and semi-retired knight errant.
Emily Female aged 6. Has a chocolate biscuit fixation and likes her pet horse but doesn’t like the scatological duties that it entails. Tries to help out and likes new clothes. Loves her dad to bits and thinks he’s ace. House matriarch and head chef, plays the violin.
Rawnsley Male aged 5 we suppose, this is never made clear and must remain a mystery. A lot quieter than his more rumbustious sister. He likes to make things and mostly they are successful. See Cassandra and Dimorthon. Studious and innocuous but perhaps the most deadly when severely provoked.
Anna (AKA Annabel) Female. An adopted orphan as well. She is the love interest and single. Mid to late thirties. She has a successful career as a Barrister and King's Counsel and will not give it up for a stupid man. Independent, arrogant and highly intelligent but has no children. Holds an American Passport but is a British National as well. Together they rapidly form a cohesive family unit after a few false starts. She becomes pregnant and that forces her hand towards marriage.
Cassandra. A genetically scratch built dragon because Rawnsley felt the world needs them.
Dimorthon. A male Dragon and partner to Cassandra. They raise a clutch of eggs, but this does not interfere with the humans life styles.
Margaret. The local Doctor MD Semi retired and always willing to help out. Worries about Aloysius and has a fair measure of Emily and her tricks.
William, her husband. Retired volunteer reserve Air Force Squadron Leader. Tinkers with old cars and at times seems to be just a prop for Margaret to lean on.
Jason & Helen. They have a history with Emily, and now she has helped them, and Harry and Knuckles. They work for Emily now, after she explained who they would like to work for.
Humans, Dragons and the Horse, a pair of Bassets and few local families all make it work together. Their own specialities strengthening each others shortfalls. Overlaid on top of all this is a sub plot that centres around them all beings heavenly but earthbound Angels and none of them accepting this because they are having to much fun being human.
The book’s penultimate chapter ends with Al and Anna meeting old friends at the church and the last chapter is just a recap of Anna's earlier life and it also closes a few loose ends. But not all...
Things get more explanation in the next book but it only deepens the mystery.
And then came the eHen...
